- 6 January 1980 - James Cochrane (21), Catholic and Richard Wilson (21), Protestant, both members of the Ulster Defence Regiment, were killed in a Provisional Irish Republican Army land mine attack on their mobile patrol, near Castlewellan.

- The Red Hand Commandos claimed to have placed a bomb in Castlewellan following the banning of an Orange Order parade.
2000
- An RUC officer was injured in a CIRA booby-trap bomb on the 1st November on the Newcastle Road in the town, close to the RUC station.
