"The Third Wheel" is the 15th episode of the FOX television series, The O.C.. The episode was written by Melissa Rosenberg and was directed by Sandy Smolan. It originally aired on Wednesday January 7, 2004. The band Rooney made a special appearance. They were the first band to play and make a special appearance on the show.

Ryan and Marissa think that they are spending too much time together, and decide to spend time apart. Anna wants to tell Summer that her and Seth are a couple, a plan Seth isn't so sure about. Luke gets in trouble at school because of his dad, and he hangs out with Ryan and Seth. Marissa hangs out with Oliver, and after they order too much food, invite Ryan, Seth and Luke over. The gang agrees to go see Rooney. Hailey continues to outstay her welcome, but her and Kirsten bond. Later, when Hailey and Jimmy are hanging out, Hailey insults Kirsten several times, and Sandy defends her. Hailey and Jimmy kiss. Oliver is busted trying to buy coke, and spies on the gang.
