The Terrapist is a free, independent student satire magazine at the University of Maryland. The magazine focuses on academic, social, and political issues, from the campus level to the global level. From The Terrapist's mission statement: The Terrapist is an essay-based satire magazine that will, with as much grace, class, and intellectual accuracy as possible, expose the oversimplification, prejudice, frivolity, and generally ridiculous aspects inherent in our current academic, political and social climate."

[edit] History

The idea for the Terrapist (the name being portmanteau "The Economist" and The University of Maryland's Terrapin mascot) originated in the Spring of 2005, stemming from a desire for a wittier and more globally aware humor magazine than other campus publications. The editors of The Terrapist set an initial goal of printing four issues per academic year. The current goal is to print two issues per year. The tone, focus, and direction of the magazine was set out in the Manifesto. The articles focus on a mix of local, national, and global issues, in a style similar to that of The New Yorker.

For the first year of publication (2005/2006), the magazine received funding from the University of Maryland's Student Government Association, the Honors Humanities Program, and Campus Progress, a program of the Center for American Progress. Two issues were produced in the first year; the first issue was released on December 8, 2005, and the second on April 23, 2006. The initial circulation was 1,000 copies per issue. With increased funding secured for the 2006/2007 academic year, the editors have set a target circulation of 5,000. This is viewed by many to be overly optimistic.
