The Starship Destiny is a pixel art webcomic that was written and drawn by Sean Howard. It was created in a similar artistic style as Howard's previous comic, A Modest Destiny. The comic launched on January 1, 2004; the last strip appeared on December 31 of the same year. The comic consists of an introduction section and two "episodes": Things Worth Fighting For... and The City on the Edge of Not Ever (TSD:CENE).
The comic is set in a space opera setting. The comic makes heavy use of cliché, and satirizes established science fiction conventions. Also, The Starship Destiny directly referenced published works in several cases. For example, The City on the Edge of Not Ever parallels one of the most famous Star Trek: The Original Series episodes, The City on the Edge of Forever. In addition to the similar name, the TSD:CENE comic shares the crucial elements of a time portal, a berserk crew member, and the crew trying to save the future from changes in the past.
The comic follows the crew of the starship Destiny. The crew is led by Bruce, a square-jawed outlaw, and includes various robots, a brain in a jar, a computer, and an alien doctor.
[edit] History
The Starship Destiny was initially planned to last a year and consist of three parts. Each part would follow the same characters but have its own plot, climax, and resolution. However, the creator stated that he was not completely satisfied with the way The Starship Destiny turned out, and discontinued the comic on March 12, 2004, and returned to a new season of A Modest Destiny.
On September 13, 2004, the comic's second episode, The City on the Edge of Not Ever began. This episode ended on December 31 of the same year. No future episodes have been announced. In addition, the author announced his decision to stop producing webcomics on August 2, 2005, so any future episodes would not likely be published in its traditional webcomic format.
[edit] Plot
The first episode of The Starship Destiny follows the adventures of Bruce and the crew of his ship, the Destiny, as they were being tracked down by various bounty hunters.
The second episode, The City on the Edge of Not Ever takes place an unspecified period of time after the first episode. The story begins with the Destiny crashing on a desert planet. The now crazy mechanic of the ship, a robot named Gizmo, escapes into a time portal. The story centers around Bruce travelling through time to find Gizmo in order to save the future.
In future episodes, it was to be revealed that Bruce was actually a clone of the man trying to kill him. This was mentioned in Howard's blog.
