For now a foe vanquished by the Sunrunners ages ago was once again growing in strength, and enemy determined to destroy Sunrunners and High Prince alike. With Rohan crowned High Prince and his Sunrunner wife Sioned, High Princess, both swore to keep the peace throughout the Continent and preserve the secret of the dragons, an inheritance they would pass on to their only child, Pol, heir to both princely and Sunrunner powers.
But not all plans of evil and power have ended with High Prince Roelstra's death. As Pol grows to manhood, other young men are being trained for a bloody battle of succession. Young men long believed dead; Pol's evil half-brothers, Ianthe's sons Ruval, Marron, and Segev. Trained by the Stoneburner sorceress Mireva, these three desire to supplant the man who they know not to be their sibling and become High Prince in his place. Meanwhile, an arrogant upstart called Masul attempts to proclaim himself Roelstra's son and heir. He is nearly installed as such, but eventually dies in a duel with Pol's cousin Maarken.
