[edit] Stairwell Project

The project

The Stairwell Project is an initiative designed for young (18 to 26 years of age), emerging and established artists/creators and curators to work together on group shows.

Exhibitions will focus on work that makes use of sound and projection based technology to produce ephemeral/intangible art forms and experiences.

The program

The first program will commence late November 2006 and initially run for 12 months, with up to seven shows running for between two to three weeks each show.

Stairwell space

The project space is located across two stairway spaces: at the front The Order of Melbourne situated at 401 Swanston Street and the rear of the building on Little LaTrobe Street. Each stairway spans a number of levels of the building.

Roof top projections and off site happenings

At the top of the building there is a rooftop garden overlooking Swanston Street, which includes a five storey wall that can be used as a projection site. There is also scope for off-site happenings or location based installations that are linked to stairwell shows.

Project philosophy

The philosophy of the Stairwell Project is that creative communities thrive on supportive professional networks that cut across disciplines and generations. The project aims to provide a unique space for artists, creators and curators to collaborate on group shows that use time-based media art forms and technology.

The Stairwell Project Director Dannielle Evans says “We believe in the transformative effects of art that you can experience but you can’t touch. Temporary collaboration allows artists to move outside their art practice and test the limits of their work.”

Hybridity

The Stairwell Project is run by creative professionals in conjunction with artists, creators and curators. It encourages hybrid work that creates unconventional cross-disciplinary alliances between fields as diverse as science, architecture, music composition, film, publishing, academia, technology, design, fashion, media and law.
