The Staircase is about a girl living when a legend began. The legend concerns a church with a choir loft, but no stairs. Builder after builder tried but couldn't build a staircase. Then, a beggar man came, built the stairs in two weeks, then left. It is said that the man was St. Joseph. In The Staircase, a girl goes to Catholic School, hates it, and sneaks out often. During one of these times she meets a beggar named Jose. Jose turns out to be the man mentioned in the legend above.
