The Soulforge is a fantasy novel set in the Dragonlance campaign setting that was released on January 1, 1999 and covers the early life of the twins Raistlin and Caramon Majere. It was written by Margaret Weis. It conflicts in some respects with earlier stories in the Dragonlance series, but the author makes clear that this is intended to be the true and accurate depiction of those events.
[edit] Plot summary
The book discusses many themes that have been alluded to and written about in other Dragonlance novels and short stories. It starts from the early life of the twins, and follows Raistlin's progress through magic school. Many things happen to foreshadow the great power that the young archmage will one day attain, and to explain why he is often vindictive and power hungry. The book concludes with Raistlin's test at the Tower of High Sorcery in Wayreth. The account of the test conflicts somewhat with a story that appeared in one of the books of the Tales trilogy, but gives a much more detailed account of how Raistlin came by his golden skin and hourglass eyes, and also how he bested the ancient archmage Fistandantilus from the time of Istar.
