"The Rain Song" (2) |
"The Song Remains the Same" is a song by the English rock group Led Zeppelin. It is the opening track from their 1973 album, Houses of the Holy.
The song features a furious multi-tracked guitar from Jimmy Page and lead singer Robert Plant's vocals.
Working titles for "The Song Remains the Same" were "The Overture", "The Campaign" and even simply "Zep". As reflected in the song's lyrics, this is Led Zeppelin's tribute to world music.
At Led Zeppelin concerts from late 1972 through 1975, this song was followed (just as on the original album) by direct segue into "The Rain Song". For this arrangement, Page employed his Gibson EDS-1275 double-necked guitar. "The Song Remains the Same" would be the opening song for the 1977 US tour and 1979 concerts, before being dropped from the setlist for the 1980 European tour.
"The Song Remains the Same" was featured on Led Zeppelin's 1976 concert film (and accompanying soundtrack), as part of lead singer Robert Plant's fantasy sequence.
[edit] Trivia
- The title was used for a concert film and soundtrack released in 1976. Footage from three 1973 Madison Square Garden shows was mixed with scenes of the band acting out their "fantasies." The band was not happy with the results.
- The lyrics were based on Robert Plant's belief that music is universal.
- This was an instrumental called "The Overture" before Plant put lyrics to it.
- Plant introduced this in concerts as "The Campaign" before the title was changed.
- Plant's vocals were sped-up.
- Jimmy Page always used his legendary double-necked guitar to play this live. He used the same guitar on "The Rain Song" which would always directly follow it.
