The Soldier Who Sees Everything Twice
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Soldier Who Sees Everything Twice is a fictional character in Joseph Heller's novel Catch-22. While faking illness in the hospital, Yossarian meets a delirious soldier who screams that he sees everything twice. No matter how many fingers the doctors hold up for him to identify, he sees two. Yossarian thinks he is a fine role model and begins to imitate him (until the soldier dies, at which point Yossarian decides to stop). In one of the most surreal sections of the book, a doctor forces Yossarian to fill in for the dead soldier when his family visits. The family doesn't seem to notice Yossarian is not really their son, Giuseppe (except, perhaps, for the mother, as the last line of Giuseppe's chapter states, "'Dress warm,' said the mother, who seemed to know").
