Vision: To rephrase a cliché; retrospect provides the clearest vision. There are those who are able to look ahead and predict how things will unfold, but hindsight levels the playing field, allowing everyone to see the puzzle rather than the pieces. With this luxury we can see the anatomy of a band:
From lifelong friendships, coincidence and design, 4 people came together with one mind to make up The Silent. The band formed in late 2004 and found themselves in the studio 3 months later recording their debut album, "Unseen". Produced by Grammy Award winner Julian Kindred (Delirious, Rebecca St James) and mastered at Abbey Road Studios by late/great engineer Chris Blair (The Beatles, Radiohead), the album has so far boasted 2 singles charting in the top 5 of Canada's CHR charts. "Aloud", the bands debut single, sat at #1 for 8 weeks consecutive just prior to the albums release in March of 2006. Momentum can be friendly. Within their first year of touring the band had been on the road with Kutless, Downhere, Kids In The Way, Everyday Sunday, and many other notable acts. They traveled all across Canada, from Vancouver to Halifax, and made appearances in the US at Soulfest and Kingdom Bound music festivals. After signing to AudioCloset Records (www.audiocloset.com), the band was asked to record a cover of the Wes King classic "Motivation" for a tribute project released internationally dubbed "Life Is Precious". Their song was chosen as a single from that record, which boasted artists such as Derek Webb, Phil Keaggy, and Paul Colman. They've been featured on many compilations, including a spot on West 49's skate video "I Am Flow", and their version of "We Three Kings" is the lead single from the Christmas compilation "Out Of The Cold". "Unseen", which is available globally through iTunes, garnered positive reviews from both radio and the press. Martin Smith (VP of Sales for CMC Distribution) joined in by saying:
"We are honoured to be a part of The Silent story...Their album, "Unseen", is not where music was, or even where music is…but where music is headed. We anticipate that the future of The Silent is enormously bright as they continue to forge ahead both musically and as young men creating passionate, thought provoking music."
Their freshman year was capped by receiving "New Artist of the Year" at GMA Canada's Covenant Awards, where they were also privileged to perform. John Mays (Head of A&R for Centricity Records) met the band at the awards ceremony and passed this message along :
"…Getting to hear The Silent play live gave me a whole new appreciation for what they're doing. Here's another band that Canadians can claim as their own, but whose music will stand up to any other bands, anywhere".
The group formed in Moncton, New Brunswick, and its 4 members (Marc Jolicoeur on vox/bass, Dennis Prescott on guitars, Matt Sutherland on guitars/keys, and Justin Macrae on drums) currently call it home. This next year sees them preparing for their sophomore album and mounting heavier North American touring, while making moves toward bringing their unique ambient rock overseas. Theirs is a global vision, both musically and morally, as demonstrated by their continuing involvement with child relief organization "Compassion Canada" (www.compassion.ca) as well as the broad scope of their lyrics. "We've never been terribly interested in telling people what to think", comments Jolicoeur about the bands motivation; "I just hope they're thinking." You can count on the fact that The Silent are thinking: thinking about how to write better…perform better…live better. Though we have the ability to see behind us, it's not advisable to stare. Fix your eyes instead on the future. It may be difficult to see, but at least you'll never get tired of the view.
