The Shuttleworths

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Shuttleworths was a comedy show that aired for 4 series on BBC Radio 4 - three between 1993 and 1997 and a fourth in 2003. It featured would-be musician and sometime philosopher John Shuttleworth, his wife Mary and friend Ken Worthington (all voiced by comedian Graham Fellows). John and Mary had two teenage children, Darren and Karen, but their voices were not heard in the original three series.

Each episode was 15 minutes long and the show was based around the musings of John on everyday life and interspersed with his own bizarre bouncy keyboard ditties on such varied matters as Austin Ambassadors, garden centres and toast (all composed on his Yamaha Portasound electronic keyboard - usually badly).

The Shuttleworths was followed by two series' featuring John, his family, and Ken; Radio Shuttleworth (John's attempt to set up a local radio station "serving all of the Sheffield region - and a little bit further even"), which ran from 1998 to 2000 and followed a smiliar format, although each show was 30 minutes in duration and included guest slots "Impress an Impresario" and "Make Mary Merry", opportunities for Graham to invite celebrity performers onto the show.
