The Shell Seekers

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

First published in 1987 by Dell, The Shell Seekers became one of Rosamunde Pilcher's most famous best-sellers. Set in England, it has the trademarks of all of Rosamunde's best novels.

[edit] Summary

Prologue:

Penelope Keeling is on a taxi ride home, after discharging herself from the hospital. The Doctor's claim is that she has suffered a heart attack, although Penelope disregards his advice, and leaves for her cottage. Once there, the author takes us on a tour of her house along with Penelope. Penelope decides to call one of her three children. But which one? Nancy, the oldest, although she is such a stick-in-the-mud. No. Noel? Possibly, as he is the man of the family. But no, too irresponsible. Finally, she calls Oliva, at her London office for her magazine, Venus.

Chapter One: Nancy

Nancy Chamberlain is going to have lunch with Oliva tomorrow to talk about the mother (Penelope). Nancy goes to talk to her children about her not being there tomorrow, and this is met with whines of "If you're going to be in London, than who's going to take Lightning to be Shod?" and "But that means I'll have to walk home from the village!"

[edit] Media Adaptions

In 1989, The Shell Seekers was made into an Emmy award-winning television film. Entertaining, but disregarded by fans because of plots from the novel being pulled out, it starred Angela Lansbury as Penelope Keeling.

In 2005, it was adapted into a stage play. The UK tour starts in Spring 2006.

In 2004, it was made into a Mini-series with Vanessa Redgrave as Penelope Keeling. It is set to air in late 2006.
