[edit] Synopsis
The Council puts Leo to the test by stripping him of his powers and memory and placing him in an unknown location in hopes that his heart will guide him to his true destiny, whether it is to be with his family or the Greater Good. When Leo does not return from his Elder meeting, the sisters are worried for his safety. An Elder appears to them and tells them of the Leo's test and through her language gives clues them in that all hope is not lost. Stressed out awaiting word on Leo's fate and furious at the Elders' plans, Piper is attacked by demons and ends up in a coma. She comes out of her body and is stuck in the cosmic void between life and death. Cole appears to her, promising that he is there to help her get Leo back. Stating that her and Leo's love is meant to be, he says that only through their love can Phoebe's faith in love be restored.
Phoebe, Drake, Paige and Darryl (from his office) search for Leo, though Phoebe apologizes for spending Drake's last day alive doing it. Drake swears that restoring her belief in love is one of his few goals before death. And he believes that the only way to save Piper is with Leo because she suffers, he says, from a broken heart.
Meanwhile, Leo has awakened on route 69, memory-less. As he stands confused, a truck nearly runs him over and crashes trying to avoid him. Leo runs to the driver's aid and ends up "healing" him by popping his arm back into joint and binding a wound on his leg. The driver comments that he must be a doctor, but Leo doesn't remember. The driver takes Leo back to a town where he registers with the police department as a missing person. Leo eats at the diner and when he has a flashback of proposing to Piper, the waitress remarks that his woman probably knocked him out with a frying pan and threw him out. Leo is fairly certain that didn't happen. He remarks he needs to get to San Francisco, that someone needs him, and a trucker offers to drive him. The trucker, however, is the disguised Elder Odin who uses the drive to sway Leo away from returning to Piper in exchange for helping everyone.
Meanwhile, Darryl has gotten word from the other police department that they have seen Leo. Both sisters want to go to find him, but can't leave Piper alone. Drake agrees to stay with her while they go to the police station to take up the chase. Walking out the door, Phoebe turns back to where Cole is standing, seeming to sense his presence, but then leaves with Paige. As they watch the scene, Cole tells Piper she must trust in her love for Leo. He says Leo will only be able to find his way back through her love for him and their family. If she trusts this love, she must allow herself to die. Like any loved ones separated, Leo will be able to feel her danger even without his powers. Piper is afraid to risk dying and leaving her boys alone and keeps her confidence in her sisters' ability to save the day. "It will work out, it always does."
Paige and Phoebe track Leo to the diner where the waitress identifies his picture and says a trucker took him west. Phoebe says they're going to need a car (where they borrow one is unclear) and they head off west. They catch up to Odin and Leo just as Odin is convincing Leo to come with him to help people. Saying it would be nice to "have a purpose," Leo agrees to "head north" with Odin just as Paige and Phoebe pull open the trucks door. Odin orbs Leo away.
Phoebe and Paige return to the house defeated. At this, Piper finally believes in Cole and returns to her body and to death. Moaning for Leo, she remains in the coma. Enheartend by this, Phoebe has Paige orb her to the bridge where they call for the Elders. Odin and Leo appear in Elder robes. Phoebe argues that the test was unfair and Odin counters that some things are too important to be left to chance. But as Phoebe urges Leo to remember, Leo can feel Piper's pain and, turning from them all, jumps off the bridge. Odin remarks he has "fallen" and is now mortal, but consents that Leo should be with Piper before it is too late.
The three orb back to Piper's side where Wyatt is already healing his mother. Drake remarks that Leo had mentioned Wyatt's abilities in the Book of Shadows.
Phoebe and Drake reminisce about their time together. Drake says he has done all he wanted to do, including bask in her affection. He leaves the room so she doesn't have to see him die. In the next room, Cole appears to him and thanks him for helping Phoebe. Drake counters his thanks, making it clear that Cole is responsible both for helping Drake become human and for sending him to Phoebe in her "time of need." He dies peacefully, and his spirit goes upward.

- There are two brief flashbacks scenes in this episode. As Leo is recovering his memory, he first sees himself killing Elder Gideon in the sixth season finale It's a Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad World, Pt 2, shortly after he remembers when he proposed to Piper in the bathroom, in the third season premiere The Honeymoon's Over.
- It's revealed in this episode that Cole sent ex-demon Drake Robin to Phoebe to help her not to give up on love.
- This was the one hundred fiftieth episode of Charmed, and as such, actor Julian McMahon was asked to make a cameo return in this episode to mark the occasion. Although his character was previously killed, in this episode it was explained that he is presently in a limbo state, forever denied love for his previous actions. However, he does have some ability to appear outside his limbo, in this case, to make sure that Phoebe does not give up on love.
- With this episode Julian McMahon marks his fifty-first appareance on the show. Without including other three episodes where he was shown in archive footage.
- This marks the final episode for the characters Drake Robin, played by actor Billy Zane and Cole played by actor Julian McMahon. Though they will both reappear on flashbacks in the season eighth episode Generation Hex, where Coop takes Phoebe to see her past loves.
- When Phoebe is saying goodbye to Drake, she says it's been three weeks since they met, but in the previous episode Carpe Demon, Drake says he only has two weeks to live.
- Leo becomes mortal in this episode.
- Wyatt is shown to have the ability to heal injuries, which ties into his Whitelighter heritage.
- This is the third time Piper has been put into a coma. The first time was shown in the season two episode Awakened and again in the season four Brain Drain.
