The Second Stage

In her second book, The Second Stage, Betty Friedan changed her views radically. If in The Feminine Mystique she explored how women became the victims of feminine qualities which were mystified, The Second Stage talked of the double enslavement of women. As a woman, she is enslaved to the man in the house and at work she is the slave of her boss. The woman was trying to be a "superwoman". For the first time, Friedan suggested structural changes within the society. She talked of the man sharing responsibilities for the children and the house.
