"The Runaround" is a song performed by Taylor Hicks, the first single to be released from his major label debut album, Taylor Hicks. It is an upbeat pop-soul song that features marching drums and a prominent brass-driven hook arranged by former Tower of Power member Greg Adams and the song's producer Matt Serletic.
The song was written by Loren Gold and songwriting partner James Renald with Taylor Hicks specifically in mind, for inclusion on Hicks's first full-length album. Gold, who played piano on the demo track, was subsequently hired as musical director and keyboard player for Hicks's touring promo band.[1]
The lyrics describe the song's persona forcibly ending an unrequited relationship with a deceitful lover.
"The Runaround" was premiered online on Hicks's official blog on November 21, 2006 and received its first live television performance on November 29 at the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center, aired on selected NBC affiliates. It received its first nationwide television talk-show performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on December 1.
