The Rude Awakening Show
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rude Awakening Show is a local morning show that currently runs from 6am until 10am weekdays on WOCM, a radio station based out of Ocean City, MD. It's hosted by Chicago-bred, but world traveled, radio personality David "Bulldog" Rothner. The radio show premiered on WOCM on January 10th, 2005-- it had formerly run on St. Maarten radio outlet Laser 101 for about 6 years. The studios for the current show are located above a Tiki bar at Seacrets, a famous bar, restaurant and nightclub in Ocean City.
On January 10th, 2006, the Mayor of Ocean City took great pride in presenting Bulldog and the Rude Awakening staff and WOCM radio a Proclamation designating January 10th as Bulldog Day.
[edit] Radio show overview
Bulldog and the Rude Awakening Show with Bulldog, Snoopy and the Dude debuted January 10th, 2005. The show features a variety of guest interviews from celebrities to politicians, musicians to athletes, psychics to porn stars, doctors and artists, and all interesting, poignant and oddball characters in between; no matter where your interests lie, the show has something for everyone. It's topical talk with humor and fun, covering world and local headlines, Hollywood gossip and social issues. John Smith brings you news, weather and sports at 7:22 and 8:22, and OC Drew from The Psychedelic Underground lends his obscure musical expertise and off-the-wall commentary with a daily contest to "Stump the Professor of Rock Knowledge." The show also has regular features from Joel McHale of E!'s "The Soup," Drew Curtis from FARK.com, movie reviews from Chicago based critic "Rorski," and daily (local) surf reports and summertime fishing updates.
While being simulcast on IrieRadio.com, the Rude Awakening Show maintains it's local focus while still engaging global & topical issues. And starting in late August, 2006, the show will be syndicated in the Caribbean on St. Maarten's Pearl 98 and heard on seven different islands that include St. Maarten, St. Kitts, St. Barts, Anguilla, Nevis, Satia, and Saba.
The cast of the show has varied since its premiere. In addition to Bulldog, the show features:
- Trevor "Snoopy" McGrory (producer)
- Billy "The Dude" Todd (sidekick/stunt boy)
- OC Drew (role indefinable)
- John Smith (newsreader/web producer)
- Chuck the Drum Slut (local musician, daily caller)
- Leighton Moore (station owner)
Bulldog frequently points out that although the show is considerably toned down from the "anything goes" atmosphere his FCC-free St. Maartens show had, he boasts the variety of topics and interviews can offer something for everyone and that the show has always been about the listeners and welcomes callers to participate. [edit] Incidents
The show tends to refrain from stunts on the scale of Opie and Anthony and Mancow Muller, but it has had its moments. Many have involved The Dude getting arrested.
- After being thrown out of a 7-11 while dressed up as a nude Cupid, a St. Patrick's Day parade confrontation with police led to the Dude being legally prohibited from entering any Maryland 7-11.
- The apex of a long-running feud between the Dude and newsman John Smith resulted in a go-kart race-- the loser of which had to have their head shaved by the owner, Leighton Moore. The Dude won and Smith's head was shaved on-air.
- After hearing that a Maryland judge had ruled that mooning someone was not illegal, Bulldog forced Dude to stand on the median of Coastal Highway pantsless, with Ocean 98 bumper stickers on his rear end.
- A milk-drinking contest nearly resulted in the hospitalization of two Seacrets kitchen workers.
