The Rosie O'Donnell Show was a popular American daytime television talk show hosted and produced by actress and comedian Rosie O'Donnell. It aired for six seasons from 1996 to 2002. Topics often discussed on the show were: Broadway, children, extended families and charitable works, people and organizations ^[1].

Starting in the fall of 1996, The Rosie O'Donnell Show proved extremely successful; early on O'Donnell was dubbed "The Queen of Nice" for her segments on charitable work and "superkids," or children who had accomplished something out of the ordinary. This was in stark contrast to many other talk shows of the era. The show was also known for featuring extended production numbers from Broadway shows which were often seen as too time consuming on other shows. In some ways, The Rosie O'Donnell Show did for Broadway what Oprah did for books. O'Donnell was known for keeping a light-hearted nature during the show as she playfully interviewed her guests and interacted with her audience. The show was known for the unique introduction by a member of audience at the beginning of each episode. The show won multiple Emmys during its run. The show abruptly ended after Rosie chose to leave for a return to stand-up comedy. Shortly before leaving her show, O'Donnell confirmed the rumors about her sexuality when she came out of the closet as a lesbian. The show was then hosted by comedian Caroline Rhea (the show was renamed The Caroline Rhea Show), but it only lasted one season.

During the show, O'Donnell claimed her "favorite human" was Tom Cruise.
A long-running segment of the show involved telling jokes that children from around the United States mailed into the studio. These jokes were eventually compiled into two books (and eventually a home video) entitled Kids Are Punny , in which proceeds from the book went to children's charity programs.
In October 1996, a fire broke out at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. As a result, the show resumed filming in the Ed Sullivan Theatre (where David Letterman films his show) for four days. The first episode filmed back in the normal studios featured a beginning scene reminscent of The Wizard of Oz, in which Rosie awakes from a dream.
In April 2001 Rosie had a 2 weeks absence from her show because of her arm and had guest hosts take her place like Joy Behar , Meredith Vieira , and Caroline Rhea (who started her sub-hosting duties in Season 6), among others.
Rosie aired her last live episode on May 22, 2002 which was the 10th anniversary of Johnny Carson's last appearance on The Tonight Show.
