The Robber Bridegroom is a novel by Eudora Welty published in 1942.

The story is a Southern fairy tale, set in Mississippi. at the opening of the novella, the legendary Mike Fink meets Welty's bandit, Jamie Lockhart, and Lockhart comes out on top. The story follows Clement Musgrove back to his home on the Natchez Trace, where he lives with his daughter, Rosamond, and second wife, Salome. Lockhart kidnaps Rosamond, and the two quickly fall in love. The story is based on the duplicity of Lockhart, both a well-respected gentleman and a bandit.

The novel utilizes the Cupid and Psyche myth, as well as elements from the European folk tale The Robber Bridegroom. Conventional elements are used generously in this unconventional story.

The book was adapted by Alfred Uhry and Robert Waldman into a Broadway musical that debuted in 1977.
The musical will be perfomed at Bullard High School in Fresno, Ca at the Feast of Fools Theater on March 8,9,15,16, and 17.
