Ivan Vladislavic's novel, The Restless Supermarket, tracks the changes in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, during the 1990s, through the eyes of a grumpy, retired proof-reader who spends his life in one café. An absorbing book by an accomplished writer, it will do little to cheer readers about the fate of Johannesburg. Though well reviewed and intellectually stimulating, the novel is notoriously hard to find, especially for readers in the west. It was published by David Philip Publishers in Cape Town in 2001 and now appears to be out of print.
