The Red and the White

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Red and the White is the official anthem of the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League.

It is sung to the tune of the Notre Dame Victory March, specifically to its chorus.

The song is sung after the Swans win a game. It would be sung by the players in the locker room.

[edit] Lyrics

Cheer, cheer the red and the white,
Honour the name by day and by night,
Lift that noble banner high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky
What though the odds be great or small,
Swans will go in and win overall
While her loyal sons are marching
Onwards to victory.

[edit] Meaning

The song was also used when the Swans were known as the South Melbourne Football Club. The only difference in the old version was the line "Swans will go in and win overall" - instead, "South will go in and win overall" was used. "Swans" was dubbed over "South" to create the Sydney version and you can still hear a faint "South" iň the background of the current recording.
