The Red Book Comics are a four piece band from Townsville, Queensland in Australia known for their up-beat sets. With musical roots of the band members varying from Punk Rock and Ska to Rock and Roll through to Folk-Rock and a strong influence from current British Indie Rock scene, The Red Book Comics play a style of music that is hard to define.
[edit] Band History
The story of the Red Book Comics is a long one. Guitarist, Troy Argent and drummer Damien Ware met during their high school years in Mackay, Queensland before both travelled to Townsville, to attend James Cook University, where Troy met Tim Mokrzecki, another guitar enthusiast. It was around this time that Troy and Damien started thinking about putting together a band, eventually taking in Tim as a second guitarist. Troy met bass player, Patrick Donald through a mutual friend at the Uni and invited him to jam with the make-shift group in mid 2005. This was to remain the line-up for the band.
The group played their first gig under the name Trepidation before deciding that this name wasn't a suitable reflection of their style and changing to The Red Book Comics as it stands today.
On the 27th of May, 2006, The Red Book Comics played in front of around 15,000 people just before kick-off of the National Rugby League game between the North Queensland Cowboys and the Canberra Raiders at Dairy Farmers Stadium. Three months later the band landed their first major support slot, playing with The Original Angels Band at Townsville venue, Bombay Rock.
[edit] The Music
The group started with covers of songs like Don't Panic by Coldplay and Wonderwall by Oasis and their very early original work reflects this with a mellow, sombre feel. Then with the emergence of bands like Arctic Monkeys and Bloc Party in the British music scene the mood began to swing. With the addition of a few new original numbers to their repertoire and a rocked-up cover of the Savage Garden number, To The Moon And Back the band began to play local Muso's Nights around Townsville and at the James Cook University club. With passing time, the bands variety has continued to increase, as is reflected by both their covers and their original work, though there has been a noticeable increase in pace and volume since the bands inception. The bands first release, The New Adventures is expected soon.
