RGS Energy Council is a society of the Royal grammar School, Guildford. Its aim is to save energy both around the school and in Guildford.
We've seen the videos, we've read it in the papers - now its time to act upon it within our school!

[edit] History

RGS Energy, founded by Phil Miller, co-run by Miller and Jimmy Hanford, was created on 20th November 2006. The website www.rgsenergy.com was designed and created by Jonathan Sadler.

[edit] Projects and events

Speed Networking
On Friday 24th November, the Energy Council held a Speed Networking event at RGS Guildford where pupils (and teachers) could voice their opinions, both positive and negative, about the council and the issues which it raised.

A big selling point was that refreshments were provided - attracting the first and second years interests massively, and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get your picture taken with one of the members of the Council, or receive their autograph. It didn't matter that Miller's bright ginger hair would be the only thing that could be seen on the negatives afterwards, because it was a very successful lunchtime, and the results from its surveys showed a general approval for the Council's policies.

Biodiesel mini-buses ----- Wikipedia's Biodiesel page
Many questions have come up about whether the school mini-buses could be run on biodiesel. Biodiesel has many beneficial factors such as less carbon dioxide emmisions, a cleaner and smoother engine. Most modern day diesel engines can run on biodiesel and older ones simply need a few ruber gaskets change so that they do not erode away. This need changing after time anyway.

Recycling
'Recycling, the possibilities are endless!' - They sure are and recycling is something that the energy council is very keen to get started. Literally Hundreds of pieces of paper are simply thrown away and wasted everyday. Take the IT Room printing area for example - every few days the bin in their (and it's a big bin) is filled up by wasted paper from bad prints etc and is then thrown away. Surely something could be done with this paper afterwards? - yes - RECYLING! To ensure that the schools capabilities of recycling go down smoothly, an on site collection point would need to be created that could have it's recyled paper etc taken away by Guildford Council or some other recycling company.

Automatic Lighting
Yes thats it - automatic lighting. Lights that turn on when a movement nearby or further up a corridor is sensed and lights that turn off when movement is not sensed. Also, the brightness of the lights once turned of could be automatically controlled by a photocell which detects the amount of natural light entering a room and adjusts the lighting accordingly. Howeverm, this is new technology and can be very expensive.

Inspection!?
We hope to get the Carbon Trust in to our school to do a review on the schools energy usage and carbon emmisions! They will also be able to help us with the automatic lighting and the location of the photocells.

[edit] Future

Although the Council is in its teething stages, and the fact that Miller and Hanford have a relatively small amount of time to make a difference - they are both L6 formers and therefore have till July 2008 in charge, when the reins will be passed on (presumably) - there seems to be a great optimism around the growing membership of the council that it could become one of the largest societies in RGS Guildford, and that would be an achievement.
