[edit] Episode recap

The family and Doug attend the unveiling of Judah's tombstone. Afterward, the family - minus Andy - travel to Shane's karate competition. While there, Shane bites an opponent in the foot. The boy, Tim is relatively unhurt and the father, Peter, invites Nancy out for dinner.

Doug, Lupita and Andy head home after the unveiling where Doug and Andy get stoned. While stoned, they attempt to chase a rat that was hiding in the tampon box where Nancy keeps her pot.

Celia and Dean have the house to themselves with Isabelle off camping. Celia confesses that she had sex with Conrad. Dean at first attempts to get revenge with an electric shaver, and they eventually have a massive argument, revealing all of the problems in their marriage.

Nancy, Silas and Shane have dinner with Tim and Peter. Silas is messaging his girlfriend and wants to go home, but they are staying overnight at the hotel. Shane and Tim attempt to interrupt their parents' flirting. Peter asks Nancy what she does for a living, but Nancy turns the conversation around and insists they don't ask the usual questions. At the end of the night, drunk, the two adults kiss but Nancy won't go any further.

Doug and Andy get increasingly stoned and attempt to use peanut butter and Shane's BB gun to attack the rat, trashing the kitchen in the process.

While outside watering, Lupita receives a visit from Alejandro, the drug dealer. He knows her mistress has been dealing, and wants her out of the neighbourhood. He gives Lupita a roll of pennies to give to Nancy.

Celia and Dean, after their fight, have sex.

The next day, the Botwins arrive home. Nancy admonishes the guys for what they did to the house and sends Doug home. She shoots the rat first go. When she gets the pennies, and realizes that Alejandro was the one who threw pennies at her car, she hurries out the door with the gun. She tells Andy to have everything cleaned up when she gets home.

Nancy drives into an alley and Alejandro follows. She frantically throws pennies at his car and tells him to get out of her life. Still reeling from her encounter with Peter and caught up in the intensity of the situation, she has sex with him. Afterwards, having the upper hand, she threatens to shoot him in the crotch with the BB gun. She tells him to keep away from her and drives off.

In her car, Nancy gets a call from Peter. Waiting at an interminable traffic light, she tells him that she isn't ready to date yet. However after she hangs up, Nancy puts his number on speed dial.

[edit] First appearances

  • Peter, Nancy's love interest.
  • Alejandro, the baseball playing drug dealer.

[edit] Title reference

  • The title refers to the traffic light Nancy waits at, which "punishes" you by waiting ridiculously long.

[edit] Trivia

  • Judah's gravestone reveals he was born in 1964.
  • Judah and Andy's father is still alive, and should be at the unveiling according to tradition. However he is at a poker competition.
  • If Andy is to be believed, Judah is buried near Walter Matthau.
  • Isabelle is mentioned to be camping with her friend Peggy, whom we meet in the season finale.
  • "The Punishment Light" Nancy waits at is a traffic light in Stevenson Ranch, CA, where the series is filmed. It is truly infamous among locals to the area, as the light has an extremely long traffic pattern sequence. When this was mentioned to the producers by several crew members trying to get to a filming location in Stevenson Ranch shortly after filming of the series began, they incorporated it into this episode.
