The Poppies (Australian band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The band is not from Australia as the title of this article states, they are from Jackson, Mississippi. The Poppies were formed and headed by Dorothy Moore and Fern Kinney; this 1960's girl-group was one of the lucky ones - they actually had a couple of hits.

After the Toys brought the girl-group sound back into mainstream pop again with "A Lover's Concerto" and "Attack"- copy-catters were popping up from everywhere. Every session girl-group was releasing a reworked-classical-piece-into-girl-group-pop-song. The Sugar Plums had "Lover's Wonderland," the Wooden Nickels had "Should I Give My Love Tonight," The Shangri-Las had "Past, Present and Future." The Apollas released "My Soul Concerto" and the Supremes even covered "A Lover's Concerto" fro an LP track on an album.

All of these songs were released in 1966 and only the Shangri-Las had a small hit.

However their was one copycat Toys record that did make it big - "Lullaby of Love" by the Poppies. In early 1966 the song peaked at #56 pop. An LP of the same title was released on Epic records. Later that year the group had another, but smaller, hit with "He's Ready." The song only made #106 pop. Two more singles were released but they did nothing. The last of their four Epic singles "There's A Pain in My Heart" became a Northern soul classic and is heavily played in UK/Australian clubs.
