The Painted Turtle

The Painted Turtle is a camp located near Lake Elizabeth in Lake Hughes, California. From LAX, it is an hour drive North on I-5, exiting on the Lake Hughes exit, and continuing for another hour. This camp is for children who are terminally or chronically ill, and allows these children the opportunity to experience camp where they otherwise might not be able to.
The Painted Turtle is part of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp family of Camps, and like all the Association of Hole in the Wall Gang Camps strives to provide a safe, caring & supportive camp environment which allows its Campers to develop self-esteem, confidence and enable them to experience something which would normally been denied to them. The chance to be a kid and enjoy camp like every other child, regardless of their ability.

The Painted Turtle seems to reach beyond illness, to inspire children with life-threatening diseases to become their greater selves. It is our mission to provide a year-round, life-changing environment for these children and their families - one that allows children to participate in an authentic camp experience by supporting their medical needs, and offers their families care, education, and respite.
[edit] Camp Experiences
Children love camp. When they enter the Painted Turtle, there are so many things to do. Activities include Horseback Riding, Ropes Course, Arts and Crafts, Woodshop, Team Building Experiences, Fishing and Boating, and Singing and Dancing.
Many different groups come through the camp every year and stay for about a week. These groups include:
- Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (Inflammatory Bowel Disease)
- Skeletal Dysplasia (Dwarfism)
- Asthma
- Kidney Transplant
- Diabetes
- Arthritis
- Liver Transplant
- Spina Bifida
- Hemophelia
- Muscular Dystrophy
