The Other Side of the Gate (Japanese: 「扉の向こうへ」 - Tobira no mukou he) is episode 49 of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2004-09-18.
Envy delivers Alphonse to Dante’s city hidden beneath Central. Al tries to convince Envy that his master doesn’t really plan to transform the homunculi into human beings, but Envy is already aware of this--and he couldn’t care less. As long as he can see humans suffering, Envy is content to perform his master’s bidding. Back at Central Headquarters, Lt. Colonel Archer has Izumi Curtis pinned down with gunfire from his new automail, but Lt. Ross returns with reinforcements and rescues Izumi.
Edward meets the Tringum brothers at the abandoned church in Central. The diary page Fletcher gave Ed reveals that the entrance to the underground city is in the altar of the church. Ed finds Dante’s city after a long descent underground. In the theater there, Ed finds Rosé dancing to a waltz, and he joins her. Rosé tells Ed that she loves him, after being apparently "brainwashed" by Dante into believing that she loves Ed and he loves her too. Ed tells her that she didn't know what she was saying. Dante enters and hands Rosé’s baby to her. While Dante is wearing the body of Lyra and pretends to be her, Ed has figured out who it really is behind the face. He confirms his suspicion by hurling a spear at her; Dante destroys the spear with alchemy without needing to draw a transmutation circle first, a skill Lyra obviously had never learned. At this point Gluttony barges in still desperately looking for his beloved Lust and attacks Ed, and learns of how Lust was killed by Wrath. Gluttony is traumitized and wanders off while Dante continues her spiel.
Dante considers herself superior to humans and therefore entitled to create Philosopher’s Stones to extend her life, no matter the cost in human lives. She justifies this by claiming she is a protector of humanity, keeping the Philosopher’s Stone out of the hands of foolish humans. Edward’s disgust only increases when Dante informs him that she had intended to transfer her soul to Rosé and become the lover of the son of Hohenheim (Ed) while in Rosé’s form. As Ed grows weary of her endless self-justifications, Dante uses Rosé’s baby to banish Ed to the other side of the Gate. Edward regains consciousness and finds himself in a body that’s not his own, reunited with his father, and in another world--ours. He is in London, England during World War I, and zeppelins have begun bombing the city.
