[edit] Plot
Ross and Rachel's arguing has two adverse effects on the rest of the gang. The first, it forces them to hang out with each separately - and feel bad because the other is alone. The second: Chandler starts smoking again - their fighting reminds him of his parents' divorce.
Rachel invites everyone - except, of course, for Ross - to her sister's ski cabin. Phoebe accidentally locks the keys to her grandmother's cab inside the cab, and they're forced to break in. Once they do, they don't get very far - they're out of gas. They call Triple A to come get - but they have no idea where they are, since Rachel always slept in the backseat on the way. With no other choice, Phoebe and Monica page Ross to come bail them out - despite Rachel's objections. Ross, who'd gone to ex-wife Carol's house (interrupting her anniversary dinner with Susan) to visit, is at first put out by their request - until Carol lends him her car in an attempt to get him out.
As soon as he gets to the rest stop with gas, he and Rachel start arguing again. Finally sick of the situation - and speaking for everyone - Phoebe asks the two to quit putting the rest of the group in the middle and at least be civil to each other. With some hesitation, Ross and Rachel agree they can at least be polite to each other. After everyone else leaves, Ross finds himself stranded at the rest stop - the battery in Carol's car died, and he's forced to replace it.
