[edit] Plot summary

Following the hearing, Sonea has been accepted into the Magicians' Guild where she has begun learning magic alongside the summer's intake of wealthy new novices from the Kyralian and foreign aristocracy. Marked by her slum dwell upbringing, Sonea encounters extreme prejudice from many of her new classmates and endures severe bullying at the hands of the popular young novice Regin, even as she struggles to protect the deadly secret she knows about the High Lord Akkarin's black magic. But one day, her world is turned upside down as Akkarin learns of her secret, and draws her into a web of lies and black magic.

To ensure Sonea and Rothen's silence, Akkarin takes over Sonea's guardianship, which only serves to make Regin more angry. He and the other novices gang up against her and finally Rothen's son advised Sonea to challenge Regin to a public duel, which she did. She was given one week to prepare and eventually won, 3-2.
