The Neighbors was also a short story written by Raymond Carver in 1980. A short summary of the Neighbors: A happy couple, Bill and Arlene Miller lived in the apartment across the hall from Harriet and Jim Stone. Bill and Arlene began to compare themselves with the Stones and envy the busy life the Stones were living. The Millers were asked to watch over the Stone’s apartment as Harriet accompanied Jim on a 10 day business trip. The night of the Stones departure, Bill entered the Stone’s apartment to feed their cat. After he had left the cat to pick at her food, Bill explored the Stones’ medicine cabinet and ended up taking a container of Harriet’s pills. After taking one of these pills, Bill took two drinks of a bottle of Chivas Regal from the Stones’ liquor cabinet. The next day, Bill left work early to make love to Arlene. Afterwards, he went back over to the Stones’ apartment to feed Kitty. After feeding Kitty, Bill became sidetracked as he ate the Stones’ food, stole their cigarettes, and used their bathroom. Arlene went over to see what was taking him so long, reminding him that he had been there for over an hour. Bill and Arlene returned to their own apartment and made love once again. Bill had Arlene call in for him the next morning. Bill went back over to the Stones’ apartment for no apparent reason. He got a couple drinks and tried on the Stones’ cloths, including both Jim’s and Harriet’s. Afterwards, Bill put everything away and went back over to his own apartment. Arlene was the next to go over and feed Kitty. Bill went over to check on her and they talked about how it’s funny to go in someone’s place. They wondered somewhat hopefully what would happen if the Stones never returned, only to realized that they had locked the key inside.
