The Monocled Mutineer

The Monocled Mutineer is a British television programme made by the BBC in 1986, shown on BBC1.
The four-part serial, written by Alan Bleasdale and directed by Jim O'Brien, was a dramatisation of the life of Percy Toplis, a deserter from the First World War and starred Paul McGann in the title role.
Promoted as historically accurate by the BBC, the series caused controversy with its scenes of the brutal regime experienced by British soldiers during the conflict and was criticised in the media for left-wing bias.
