Archibald Beechcroft detests his office job, his co-workers, and his wretched life. One day, an office boy accidentally spills coffee on Beechcroft. In apology, the boy gives Beechcroft a copy of The Mind and the Matter. Soon Beechcroft deploys reality bending powers able to reshape the world around him.

He causes everyone to vanish, but quickly grows bored. He repopulates the world with people in his own image, and finds them all bitter and grumbling. In the end, he reshapes the world back to normal, and adopts a kind of patience.
