[edit] Luther's Campaign
The Methuselah's Stone is the legendary crystal that Immortal Rebecca Horne kept for centuries and divided into small pieces that she gave to each of her students when it was their time to make it on their own. According to Immortal legend, this crystal would increase an Immortal's power, making them invulnerable. It was for this reason that Luther, Rebecca’s former pupil, tried to gain all the pieces by killing Rebecca and her students one by one in early 1994. He almost put all the pieces together, but the last student alive, Amanda managed to keep one. This last piece had originally been given to Henri Valjean, who, before being killed by Luther, gave his piece to his maid for protection. Luther's thugs stole Valjean's crystal from the maid's son, but it was retrieved by Amanda and her friend Duncan MacLeod soon after. MacLeod was able to kill Luther, but apart from Valjean’s piece, the stones were lost to them. In fact, Luther’s Watcher Nathan Stern, retrieved the other crystals to prevent them from interfering in The Game and secured them in the Watchers' Headquarters in Paris.
[edit] The Stone and The Watchers
In early 1996, Methos the oldest known Immortal, used his cover as Watcher "Adam Pierson" to research the crystal. He learned that it was actually the mystical talisman owned by the ancient biblical figure Methuselah who lived to be 969 years old and was known in history to be the oldest living mortal man. Methuselah gave the stone to his grandson Noah, who used it to survive the Great Flood aboard the Ark. The stone's true power, according to the Watchers, was to grant Immortality to the mortal that had it and supposedly did nothing for Immortals.
The reason for Methos’ research was so that he could give it to his dying mortal lover Alexa Bond and save her from death. At the same time, a masked team of mercenaries tried to kill Amanda and take her crystal, but she escaped. She sought help from Duncan MacLeod and both reached the conclusion that the only ones who could know the whereabouts of the crystals were The Watchers. Alone, she tried to steal them from the Watcher’s Headquarters, surprising Methos, who was about to do the same. Thinking that it had been Methos the one behind her assassination attempt, Amanda attacked him, making the Headquarters’ alarms to turn on, preventing both from stealing the stone. After a few more misunderstandings, and a sword fight, in which Methos was the victor, he was able to convince Amanda that he was not the one who had tried to kill her.
They tried again to steal together the crystal from the Watchers' Headquarters, but were surprised by the Nathan Stern, now the Watcher Headquarters' chief, and Amanda's Watcher, Dan Geiger, who had alerted Stern of Amanda's current activities. While Amanda escaped with the crystals, Methos was mortally shot and the two Watchers were surprised to see that they had an Immortal among them. Stern wanted to kill Methos and accused him for betrayal as the Watcher, but Geiger convinced Stern to trade him for the stone. At the exchange, Geiger and his team of commandos shot Stern and his Watcher henchmen, revealing to be the one who had tried to kill Amanda. He sought to become Immortal at all cost.
Amanda gave Stern the crystals, but realising Amanda's crystal was missing, he called out MacLeod, knowing she wouldn't do exchange alone. Duncan appeared and gave him the last piece. Immediately, all crystals morphed into the stone. Geiger then ordered the Immortals execution but Duncan had other plans. He had put an explosive charge in his car and created a distraction by activating it. Chaos ensued, which resulted in Duncan being shot along with all of Geiger's gang. Finally, Amanda shot Geiger, which resulted in him dropping the crystals in the Seine. A second shot from Amanda killed Geiger, who also fell dead into the river. Amanda was able to retrieve her piece, but all of the other stones were lost forever, preventing Methos from saving Alexa. Yet, with Stern's death he was able to keep his secret from The Watchers.
