The March (novel)

The March is a 2005 historical fiction novel by E. L. Doctorow The novel takes place during the American Civil War, with events and characters related to the Union Army commanded by William T. Sherman from the fall of Atlanta in September 1864, through Sherman's March to the Sea and subsequent campaign in the Carolinas, through to just after the surrender of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's Army in late April of 1865.
The novel's characters include such historical figures as Generals Sherman, Slocum and Grant, in addition to a variety of fictional characters, soldier and civilian from both sides of the conflict affected by the events.
