The Man with the Mechanical Arm (Japanese: 「疾走！機械鎧（オートメイル）」 - Shissou! Ōtomeiru , Dash! Automail) is episode 5 of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2003-10-18.
Continuing their journey to Central, Edward and Alphonse are directed by Lt. Colonel Mustang to board the train that is leaving the station at that very moment. Coincidentally (...or perhaps not), their train is hijacked by a group of terrorists. The leader of the terrorists, a man named Bald, has an auto-mail arm equipped with a machine gun. Bald and his group are on the train to take General Hakuro and his family hostage, demanding the release of their leader from prison.
While not afraid to confront the hijackers on their own, Ed and Al receive assistance from Major Maes Hughes of the State Military's Investigations Division. Hughes was on board the train as the head of a protective detail for General Hakuro. Bald and his cronies are simply outmatched by the combined efforts of the Elric Brothers and Major Hughes.
The train arrives safely, with all the terrorists in custody. Bald manages to break free on the platform, but Lt. Colonel Roy Mustang, a.k.a. "The Flame Alchemist," gives Bald a personal demonstration of his abilities. Mustang informs Ed that a grateful General Hakuro has given Ed permission to take the State Alchemy Examination. Ed is annoyed--if the state wasn't previously disposed to permit a child to take the exam, does this mean Mustang manipulated the situation to fulfill a promise that wasn't his to give?
