One of a set of unconventional SF novels written by Doris Lessing. They are linked by the name Canopus in Argos, but each is a story in its own right and separate from the others. Themes and principles are very different from typical space opera. The work has also been staged as a play.

This tale takes place on a world a long way from Earth. The climate is turning cold and the native inhabitants are helped and guided by the benevolent Canopans. The link to Earth's own history is indirect.
