The Magic of Morris
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The Magic of Morris" is an anthology of Morris dance tunes played by various artists.
Recorded 1945 - c 2005. Released on CD in 2005. Running time 73 minutes 13 seconds.
This is an ideal CD for morris musicians wanting to learn tunes as many of the records are field recordings which give appropriate speeds. For the general listener the studio recordings by the Silurian Border Morris Men and by the various "Morris On" bands have the most entertainment value. One or two recordings have extraneous sounds of the audience and traffic. All of the tunes have enormous bounce. For the academic historian, the recordings by Father Kenneth Loveless and William Kimber (1872 - 1961) are probably the closest we can ever get to what Cecil Sharp heard 100 years ago. Somewhat confusingly, the titles are sometimes the name of the dance, and sometimes the name of the tunes. There is no indication of the dates of the recordings or the authors of the tunes, so we must assume that they are all traditional. Where the sound of bells or sticks is audible, there is the word "field". The collection was compiled by Steve Adamson of The Morris Ring.
