The Magic Door Television Theatre
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Magic Door was a children's television show on WBBM-TV in Chicago, Illinois from 1962 to 1977. The title came from the show's theme song:
A Room Zoom Zoom. A Room Zoom Zoom. Gilly Gilly Gilly Gilly Ot Zat Za Come open the magic door with me, With your imagination there's so much we can see. There is a doorway that leads to a place. I'll find my way by the smile on your face.
The Magic Door was shown at around 7am Sunday mornings for Jewish kids who couldn't watch Saturday morning cartoons since Saturday is the Jewish sabbath.
The show's characters were "Tiny Tov" (a live character "reduced" to appear as a kind of elf), and two hand puppets named "Scrunch" and "Judy". The show entailed Tiny Tov traveling back through time (riding his Magic Feather spaceship)and showing a story from the Hebrew Scriptures (which was told using hand puppets). Every episode would include a brief Hebrew vocabulary lesson, stepping through Hebrew letters to form some word. The magic door was in an acorn house.
Tiny Tov was played by Charles Gerber, who also created the song lyrics. He is an actor who currently resides in New York.
