The Magdala, Hampstead

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Magdala is a pub located at 2a South Hill Park, Hampstead, London.

The pub is named after Sir Robert Napier, 1st Baron Napier of Magdala. Magdala was the fort of Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia who had imprisoned 60 European diplomats and missionaries there. Napier successfully led an expedition which freed the hostages.

The Magdala is notorious for being the place where Ruth Ellis murdered her lover, David Blakely. She shot him outside the pub on Easter Sunday, 1955. The lounge bar has framed newspapers featuring the event on the wall. It has even been claimed that the bullet holes caused by the shooting are still visible, but this is doubtful.
