The Legends of Treasure Island
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Legends Of Treasure Island is a 1993 cel animation cartoon from the UK. It had two seasons of 13 episodes each and each episode runs for 30 minutes (26 X 30).
producers: FilmFair / Central Animation for Carlton UK Productions
director: Dino Athanassiou
producer: Peter Lewis
The main storyline of the series, although loyal to the main idea of the original Robert Louis Stevenson's story "Treasure Island", deviates from the original plot in the book, which gives the series a more mysterious and dark look, it also shows a lot of magic and new characters. In fact, you will not find most of the characters and stories in the original story; not to mention that those present are anthropomorphic animals plus some new characters, but it's only for the better for those who can appreciate a new angle and imagination. The first episode is the one episode that most of all, is similar to the original story.
It happens to be that as much as this cartoon was nicely done (despite the lack of care on the shows' continuity), most people did not see it, it was broadcast in the UK, Mexico, Australia, Israel and a few European and Latin American countries. The series had a few VHS tapes and one DVD released at 1997, the DVD consists of four episodes (episodes 1, 2, 3 and 13 respectively) from the series put together onto an 86 minutes animated film.

[edit] Characters
This cartoon, unlike other Treasure Island cartoons and movies, featured the main characters as animals:
Jim Hawkins: Dog
Ben: Dog
Long John Silver: Fox
Dr. Livesey: Dog
Captain Smollett: Dog
Squire Trelawney: Pigeon
Pew: Rat
Jane One of the exclusive characters for this Treasure Island incarnation. Jane is an anthropomorphic vixen (but there are still some who consider her to be a cat) that was kidnapped by Silver and since her parents did not want her back she got stuck with him, already on the first episode she turn sides and teams up with Jim, to whom she appears to have feelings.
Subsidiary recurring characters included the pirates Morgan (a hog), Nebbich (a hyena), a weasel and Rat (who was, ostensibly enough, a rat). These characters featured mainly in the first season and only made minor appearances at the beginning of the second before disappearing altogether.

[edit] Trivia
- So far, Jane's surname remains a mystery; this and the lack of detail on her past make her such an enigmatic character, but not as much like that of the "autistic" Rei Ayanami-like type since Jane has a fiery and tomboyish behaviour.
- Jane seems to be used to wearing male clothes.
- Adding more onto Disney's fame of stealing ideas from less mainstream works; it is rumored that Amelia the character from their animated film "Treasure Planet" is a rip off out of Jane. They are both physically and psychologically alike.
- Besides having a larger life span on this version, Pew seems to be a sorcerer.
- In Australia it aired on ABC TV in the afternoons.
- Also in Australia the complete 2 seasons were available on video from Reel Entertainment.
- In Mexico only the first season has aired back on time period of 1994-1995, after that; reruns of the first season kept airing until around 1996 or 1997 on the back then animation cable channel ZAZ.
