The League of Societies
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
THE LEAGUE OF SOCIETIES FOR THE DIRECTION OF THE CARMICHAEL TRUST commonly referred to as "The League of Societies" is an organization comprised of three North Carolina Secret Societies: The Order of Gimghoul at the University of North Carolina, The Gorgon's Head Lodge at the University of North Carolina, and the Society of the Seven at East Carolina University.
[edit] History
The organization was formed in 1972 by Leo Jenkins, the Chancellor of East Carolina University and UNC system President William C. Friday while attending a meeting of the UNC system Board of Governor's. A conversation between the two revealed that each were members of collegiate secret societies. President Friday, a member of both the Order of Gimghoul and the Gorgon's Head Lodge, proposed the idea of unifying the three societies funds in an effort to award scholarships which would further benefit the University of North Carolina system. Jenkins, a Society of the Seven member, agreed.
The men spoke with members of their respective societies, and secretly met at Gimghoul Castle in Chapel Hill, NC for the first time in the fall of 1972. As a consequence of this meeting, the Carmichael Trust Association was formed, named in honor of the late William D. Carmichael, University of North Carolina President and honorary member of the Order of Gimghoul.
