The Last Waltz (2002) |
A Musical History (2005) |
The box set The Last Waltz is a deluxe re-release of the 1978 album documenting the 1976 concert. Featuring a full thirty-seven tracks taken from the concert, all still rife with overdubs, resequencing and editing, it paints a more complete, but by no means fully complete, picture of exactly what The Band's final concert with its classic line-up was like.
Among those tracks added are a version of Louis Jordan's "Caldonia" featuring Muddy Waters and Pinetop Perkins trading off the vocal, a radically reworked version of the live favorite "Rag Mama Rag", Neil Young and Joni Mitchell joining The Band on "Acadian Driftwood", a blistering take on the Stage Fright classic "W. S. Walcott Medicine Show" and the concert closer, "Don't Do It", which could have been the feeling Levon Helm had at that time. In addition, several edits made on the original 1978 set have been done away with, and certain songs (such as "Forever Young" with Bob Dylan) are presented without the edits for the first time legitimately.
Tracks still missing are a version of "Georgia On My Mind", the full versions of the two jams presented, the full version of "Chest Fever", and the concert takes of "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)" and "Evangeline". The only way to get these tracks are to track down a bootleg copy of the show, which is nearly impossible.
