The Kirana Gharana

The Kirana Gharana is one of the most prominent schools of Hindustani classical music. It derives its name from the town of Kirana near Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh in India.

Kirana Gharana, like many other Gharanas look at the Dharwad belt in Karnataka for traditional gayaki. This is notable since Hindustani Music which is a traditional north Indian classical music looks at South India for shudh and traditional gayaki.

Most Hindustani musicians from Karnataka are exponents of Kirana Gharana; Kirana gharana has therefore consequently imbibed many of the features of the south Indian tradition.
