The Kiddush Club is a Jewish rock and roll band founded in 1988 by Rabbi Gedalia Zweig. It is based on parodies of rock and roll tunes although they have recorded original compositions as well. To date they have recorded 3 albums; the most popular of which was "Toys" recorded in 1997.
[edit] History
Gary (or Gedalia) Zweig was in various rock bands in High School, and started to parody popular songs with Jewish themes. In 1975 while studying at Aish HaTorah in Israel he took the popular song "I'm a Believer" by the Monkees and changed it to "I'm At Yeshiva". He performed the song in Jerusalem for the students and Rabbi Noah Weinberg on the Purim festival and it was an instant hit. In the summer of 1981 and 1982 he toured camps across Eastern Canada with his new group, The Jewbey Brothers.
While studying in New York in 1981 he wrote parodies of other popular songs and recorded them with Zalman Schreiber at his studio in Brooklyn. He took these recordings to his friend Rick Magder (whose two brothers had studied in Jerusalem with Gedalia) of Magder Films in Toronto. Rick gave studio time to complete enough songs for an album. The self-titled first album "Kiddush Club" was released in September 1988 on cassette only. A record deal was made with Aderet Music of New York to distrubute the album across America. A second album followed in 1990 titled "The Wine Album" and was released on compact disc as well as cassette. The bands height of popularity was when they performed twice on the popular morning television program in Toronto, Breakfast Television. La La Latke was also featured on CBC radio 740 for the Chanuka edition.
The band was also featured in Chatelaine story on Klezmer music and the Record , Canada's music magazine June 1998.
After two years of recording in 1997 the band's third album "TOYS" was released which was an album of children's songs. It was distributed by Trend Music Group in Canada and the USA. The band is currently waiting to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Rabbi Gedalia has also served as Rabbi in Barbados and Goteborg, Sweden ,as well as The First Russian Synagogue in Toronto.
The Band is currently working on a Greatest Hits Album with 2 new songs.
