The Keep is a novel written by American author F. Paul Wilson. It is also the first volume in a series of six novels known as The Adversary Cycle.

[edit] Synopsis
In the spring of 1941, a message is received from a German Army commander stationed in a remote castle high in the Transylvanian Alps: "Something is murdering my men." An SS extermination squad is sent to destroy the enemy, presumed by the military to be partisans.
The men however are being killed by Molasar, an evil entity imprisoned in the keep which was purposely built to hold him. If he chooses Molasar cannot be seen or heard, but he can suck all the light and warmth from a room, selecting his victim in the darkness and leaving a bloodless, mutilated corpse. One victim a night, over and over.
The two German officers despise each other. One is a Nazi, the other is a loyal German who hates everything the Nazis stand for. But they do agree on one thing-outside help must be sought. They summon an expert on the history and folklore of the region, and soon the enfeebled Jewish Dr. Cuza arrives at the keep with his daughter Magda.
Molasar subverts Dr. Cuza to his cause, healing him of his infirmity and implying he will free the Jews of the chains of the Nazis. In the meantime the original imprisoner of Molasar, Glaeken, arrives to finally defeat the enemy he bested long ago, not killing him at the time so as to preserve his own immortality.

[edit] Adaptations
The book was made into a visually interesting, but otherwise incomprehensible, film by Michael Mann for Paramount in 1983. The film was a critical and financial disaster but retains a cult following comprised mostly of Tangerine Dream fans due to their work on the soundtrack. Most recently it has also been adapted into comic form by Wilson himself.
