The Journeyman Chronicles, originally called The Journeyman Project Revisioned, is a remake of the Journeyman Project trilogy of video games as a Half-Life 2 Total Conversion developed by Vigilant EC.
[edit] About
A group of several dedicated fans have started a remake of the entire trilogy using the Source engine, the same engine that was used in the first-person shooter Half-Life 2. Plans are to release the game in small episodes, rather than all at once. So far, seven pre-alpha stage screenshots and videos have been released [1], including one trailer. As of summer 2006, the group has started preliminary work and is looking for additional team members.
[edit] Why remake the series?
"Just like every other fan of a great game series, we wanted to see this great classic video game reproduced and Revisioned for the next gen world without getting rid of what made the original game so great! Our goal is to bring in all the next gen features such as Direct X 9 and 10, with the support of Shader 3.0, and apply it to a game engine, then recreate the Journeyman Universe in a real time environment.
With the new features we can allow the player to interact with the environment like never before in the Journeyman Series. We can allow physical interaction using the Havok 2 system and possibly the next step up with the 3rd version of the software. With this, you can venture through a forest and collide with plant life in the most realistic way, similar the Crysis game engine. Although it may seem like Physics is nothing but skin deep, don't fret, we will involve physics in complex puzzles, and in anyways, involve it with the gameplay itself.
Physics isn't the only thing that can improve the feel of an interactive environment. We will also implement a GUI system that applies over Computers and Devices within the game world. This feature can be seen in games such as Doom 3, Quake 4, and Prey. This allows a greater amount of interactivity between the player and the game world. Think about it, instead of seeing textured computer displays in the Temporal Security Annex that are static, which was the cause of last gen game engines, we can now have the player go from walking around to controlling a computer without clicking anything.
Interaction is our key element, but what else can be done with the Source engine that can bring out the next gen feel for The Journeyman Project? Well, think about it, every game in the series except Turbo had a bunch of disks, which you need to switch between each other when you have to travel to a new time period. Well, thats no more! We want to create a new feature that allows maps to be loaded before you actually trigger the map change! Basically the feature involves a trigger that tells the engine to start caching the map into the system, then when you actually arrive at the map change, it will appear seamless, as if the maps are stitched together.
This complete game will be as cinematic as possible utilizing realistic Character models, and advanced Facial Expressions to bring to life the cinematics seen in the games, now in real time form. Everything from the Caldoria Dream, to the completion of the Legacy puzzle, will be kept intact, but with a next gen facelift.
As of now, we don't know how we will handle the voice acting, but as suggest by some of the members in our community, we should rip the voices from the original game and use it in the recreation. Its a good idea, but it may infringe on copyright laws and will not give us the most desired quality for being a reproduction. Ideas on the forefront are to bring back the all star cast from the original games to recreate voice overs specifically for this game, but this is just a mere idea and hasn't been execute yet. If its not possible, we will bring in quality voice actors to do the best impressions and vocals of the original characters."
