[edit] Synopsis
Michael burns his foot while grilling bacon on his George Foreman grill. While Dwight is coming to "rescue" him, he crashes his car and suffers a concussion, which makes him more likeable to his co-workers, particularly Pam. Michael is upset with the staff's lack of compassion towards his "disability". Jim and Michael take Dwight to the hospital where Michael insists that his burned foot is a more serious injury than Dwight's blunt force trauma. Before they go, Pam bids "goodbye" to the concussed Dwight, aware that she will probably never see the good-natured version of Dwight Schrute ever again.
[edit] Goofs
- Although the nurse says that no metal is allowed beyond a certain point, the nurse brings Dwight on a metal wheelchair.
- During the cat-scan Dwight can be seen wearing a watch which would not be allowed
[edit] Deleted Scenes
- Jim popping some of Michael's foot packaging bubbles. Jim then says he's had a grill for 6 years, and has never burnt himself on it because he doesn't use it as a pillow.
- Michael explains that sometimes when he's zoned out, he'll pop some bubble wrap at home.
- Dwight explaining that the pioneers never wasted anything, and Jim says Michael should go to the hospital.
- Ryan is assigned to draw a handicapped sign for Michael so he can park closer to the building.
- Mike rubbing butter on his foot, and Angela passes and asks, "Who made popcorn?"
- Michael talking to someone on the phone, but he hangs up on him when Ryan walks in with Michael's movies. He rented some for Michael to watch, and then gives Michael some dark meat chicken. Michael then tells the camera no matter what you have, if you eat dark meat chicken you can walk on the moon.
- Dwight using the copier to copy nothing. He then explains to the camera signs of a concussion, and while he's doing that, he's doing all the things he's naming.
- Dwight getting scared that he needs to go into a machine. He then asks Michael if he will come into the room with him and stand next to him.
- Michael and Jim watch a movie in Spanish in the hospital waiting room.
These scenes last 3 minutes. This would bring the running time from 21 minutes to 24 minutes.
[edit] Trivia
- When fans were asked to vote on NBC.com for their favorite episode in Summer 2006, this episode was selected and aired again on August 17.
- It appears Dwight either reverted his emergancy contact from "the hospital" back to "Michael Scott" or Ryan never changed it.
- Michael's interview at the beginning of the episode is Jenna Fischer's favorite of the series so far.[1]
- This is the sole episode Rainn Wilson and Steve Carell submitted for Emmy consideration in the acting category for 2006.
- Several versions of the Dwight-Angela scene were filmed, including Dwight spanking her, swatting her, trying to kiss her, and picking her up by her butt. After many takes, actress Angela Kinsey ended up with a big bruise on her butt.[2] Of course, in the end, "spanking her" was used.
- One small bit in the Billy Merchant scene was cut out. At one point in the scene, Michael asks the employees, "Do you notice anything different about Billy?" and they all stare in horror. Cut from the scene is when, after they don't react, Michael grabs one of the wheels on Billy's wheelchair and begins to roll him back and forth and asks, "Still don't notice anything different?"[2] This is the introduction of Merchant, the park landlord.
- Producer Greg Daniels loves the scene when Michael tries to get Pam to put butter (Country Crock) on his foot. Says Daniels, "It's one thing she won't do."[3]
- Kinsey is actually caught "out of character" in the opening moments of this episode. In the shot with Oscar in the foreground talking about a movie trilogy, Brian Baumgartner and Kinsey can be seen in the background laughing. She admitted in her MySpace blog: "We were just being ourselves goofing around and didn't realize they had already started rolling the camera!"[4]
- This is the first time documentary material is seen, as Michael's microphone is seen.
- This was one of six episodes that was submitted to Emmy voters for Best Comedy consideration, which they went on to win. The other five were "The Dundies," "Booze Cruise," "Christmas Party," "The Secret" and "Valentine's Day."
