[edit] History

The Independent school was founded in 1980 by Jean Garvey of Wichita, Kansas. Its original location was an unoccupied hospital basement. It quickly grew, and Garvey decided to have a new campus built on at her residence on East Douglas Street. A lower school building was built, then later a new building housing the upper and middle schools was constructed. As the student body continued to grow, separate middle school and upper school liberal arts buildings were constructed. The school now has over 750 students in Kindergarten through 12th Grade.

The buildings are easily recognized for their unusual paint colors, such as salmon terracotta.

2005-2006 Season: The Panther basketball team earned 7 wins and 14 losses to their credit after a tough schedule that included 7 games against all-state opponents. Independent started with a 4-2 record going into winter break but cooled off and went just 3-12 in the final 15 games. Only 4 seniors were on the team, with just 3 playing substantial minutes. Mostly made up of underclassmen, the Panther basketball squad has set an excellent base to build upon in the future.
