The Great American Scream Machine is a steel roller coaster located in Six Flags Great Adventure. The 173-foot ride was built in 1989 and reaches speeds up to 68 mph. It was designed by Ron Toomer and built by Arrow Dynamics, who also built its sisters, Shockwave (which was dismantled in 2002) at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois and Viper at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California. These all have three loops after the lift hill drop. Then after the three loops, it runs through a batwing, and then speeds through a double corkscrew.
The roller coaster track is red and the supports are white. The trains are named Freedom, Liberty, and Spirit, and are painted red, white and blue respectively. The grounds feature a design similar to the red and white stripes in a waving American flag. The shoulder restraints are also different from most Arrow coasters, whereas the handles are made of foam instead of metal. These are also found on Viper.
The capacity is 1680 guests per hour. 28 guests ride per train. 3 trains dispatch a total of 84 guests every 2 minute and 20 seconds, 20 times an hour.
Great American Scream Machine's On-ride camera is located at the beginning of the double corkscrew.
