From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Girl Who Owned a City is a novel by O. T. Nelson, first published in 1975. This book, sometimes taught in schools, is considered to be best suited for those between the ages of 10 and 14 (depending on reading ability).
This is a post-apocalyptic book about leadership and survival.
A lethal virus has swept the earth, sparing only children aged twelve and under. Mayhem ensues, and extends through middle America. Gangs and fierce militia of children begin to form almost immediately. The same fate would befall the children on Grand Street if not for the protagonist, Lisa, a twelve-year-old girl who becomes their leader. With her leadership Lisa, the band of children have food, even toys, in abundance. Their number, among other things, has become their means for protecting themselves from the fierce gangs that roam the neighborhoods. Soon after, when their security becomes compromised, Lisa conceives the idea of a fortress. Together, the children build their own miniature city inside the school where the group may live safely and happily. Lisa intends to lead them there.
